Chrysanthemums: The November Birth Flower
Every month we are asking if you know about your birth flower. And this month we're talking about Chrysanthemums!
The idea that birth flowers, such as the chrysanth, have meanings was introduced in the early 18th century by members of the literary community. So each month was assigned a flower. And it was thought that the characteristics of those would be inherited by those born in that month.
The birth flower for November
Chrysanthemums are without doubt the most versatile of all the birth flowers. They are grown in a huge variety of colours, shapes, and sizes. From widely available stems that are commonly used in flower arranging, to garden shrubs, houseplants, and even Japanese bonsai trees. And Chrysanthemums are a recognisable and showy bloom that have a lot of impact.
Chrysanthemum Meaning and Symbolism
As with many of our birth flowers, the chrysanthemum has different meanings depending on their colour. It also depends on where you are in the world.
In the UK and the USA, Chrysanthemums are considered a positive and bright flower . And flowers that can be given happily for any occasion.
But when it comes to what they represent as a birth flower, their symbolism is:
- Compassion
- Friendship
- Joy
In China the chrysanthemum is the city flower of Beijing and Kaifeng. In these two cities there is a tradition where residents cultivate a wide range of chrysanthemums. And they even hold a festival every year to celebrate the flower! It is called The China Kaifeng Chrysanthemum Cultural Festival. The festival takes place between the 18th October and the 18th November.
The chrysanthemum is a very symbolic plant in Japan. It is one of the symbols of the Emperor and his family, and also represents Autumn. Not to mention, there are a number of festivals and exhibitions dedicated to the flower throughout the season. And growing them is a very popular hobby. There are a lot of competitions to see who can grow the best bloom that take part all across the country.

Culinary Uses
Both the flowers and the leaves of chrysanthemums are edible! And, they can be used for all sorts of culinary dishes. They can be steamed for tea, and made into wines such as gukhwaju. And are also added to salads and curries as a colourful and fragrant garnish.
Also, the petals make a lovely addition to desserts and puddings.
Growing Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemums are a very easy plant to grow. When left to their own devices the flowers will come back year after year.
Choose unusual and exciting varieties to brighten up your garden. My particular favourite has always been the fried egg chrysanth. It's white with a dark yellow centre! Whereas my Mum is always happy with a bunch of pompom chrysanths. These are her absolute favourite.
