Themed Christmas Trees: This Year's Biggest Trend
If you're like us, you're already thinking ahead to the most magical time of the year. And when it comes to the festive season, the first thing to appear on those to-do lists are getting out the box(es) of decorations to deck the halls.
And there really is nothing quite like seeing those precious and meaningful baubles year after year. But did you know that the latest trend is to decorate your tree according to a theme?
So what do we mean by that…
What are themed Christmas trees?
Well, it means quite literally keeping all of your decorations within the same overall aesthetic. So put away those generic angels, the threadbare tinsel. 2022 is all about a little something different.
Here are our favourite ideas for a unique way to spread the cheer this Christmas:
All Natural
We've made 2022 the year that Bombus really takes sustainability seriously. Plastic free, ethical, and locally sourced is the way to go. So why not choose to carry that on to your themed Christmas trees? Choose all natural ways to dress your tree by making your own decorations!
Our gardens, countryside, and hedgerows have treasures hiding in plain sight. Fill your tree with foraged items for an impressive, festive, and environmentally friendly display. Not a bit of plastic to be found!
Our top picks for stuffing your themed Christmas trees from nature are:
- Pinecones
- Acorns
- Walnuts
- Holly
- Dried honesty
- Beech
- Ferns
- Heathers
- Willow
- Laurel
The Woodlands Trust have a great guide here to help you forage for Christmas decorations, sustainably and responsibly. As well as handy tips on what to do with your haul!
You can even pick up a bag of oranges from the supermarket for as little as 75p to slice up and turn into fragrant garlands or table place settings. Simply slice them thinly, lay them on a baking sheet, and slip them into a warm oven, turned off after you've cooked your tea. Leave them there to dry overnight!
And if you're feeling really creative, this gingerbread recipe is perfect for a craft project with the kids. You can make a lot of hanging decorations out of one batch, and they smell fantastic.
Sweet Tooth
For little and big kids alike Christmas is the time for treats. Especially sweet ones. We love the idea of stacking our tree with edible sweets, lollies, and candies. But they don't all have to be the real deal. There are a lot of sweet-inspired decorations out there.
We really think that this theme works well if you stuff your tree to the brim with red and white! But it doesn't need to be expensive. You can buy candy canes by the dozen at Poundland in the lead up to Christmas.
Use them for your tree, garlands, the tops of presents, and even as table decorations.
Pet-tastic
Move over kiddos, we all know that Christmas is really about our pets. Dressing them up in silly outfits for the Christmas card photo. Buying them ridiculously expensive stockings (have you seen this one for your dog!!?). And giving them their very own Christmas dinner.
But have you thought about making the decorations all about them too?
Well, there are absolutely hundreds of pet decoration options out there for you to choose from. Personalised pet ornaments make for a really special way to honour the most loved member of the family, no matter how small.
But you could also make a garland out of dog biscuits…
Or trim the tree with a garland of paw prints like this one!
We're up in Space-Man
Thanks in part to our amazing success at Eurovision this year with Sam Ryder's Space Man…a galaxy far far away is a popular way to bring your Christmas decorations bang up to date and into the 21st century.
Rocket ships, stars, and planet themed baubles look great with metallics.
We love mixing these up with purples and turquoise to give a really sparkly look to this theme. Or alternatively keeping it monochrome with all silvers, whites, and greys!
Rainbow Bright
We've been big fans of the rainbow here at Bombus for years. In fact we wrote a whole blog about the symbolism behind the rainbow right here!
So why not take the bright, and meaningful rainbow and turn it into your most colourful Christmas ever?
Even John Lewis Christmas department agrees that rainbows make the best decorations…they have a whole section for the rainbow theme this year!
So many themed Christmas trees...
We have a million ideas of how you could theme your tree this year. The above is just a snapshot of ideas. We would also love to see trees decorated to represent:
- Your favourite hobby
- Sports
- Toadstools and mushrooms
- Exotic animals
- Block colours (such as an all-orange tree!)
- Family photographs (cover your tree in snaps of your nearest and dearest!)
- PomPoms
